A-Z Fall Trends

ONESTYLE runs down this season’s must-haves to keep you in the loop of what’s in or out of fashion.

Androgyny: It’s time to give girly dresses a rest and get ready for some gender-bending action. TOPSHOP banks on the notion and draws inspiration from the Teddy Boy subculture back in the 60s for their Autumn/Winter 2011 collection. Think sleek tailoring and classic sweatshirts.

Boots: This season, lace-up ankle boots are making waves, thanks to its perfect mix of utilitarian and feminine. Opt for a pair with bold designs and wear it with skirts or leggings—flirty with a touch of edge.

Chiffon: Ideal for women who want to both reveal and cover, see-through is the answer (and fabric) to looking chic. Lebanese designer Elie Saab’s couture chiffon gowns add a touch of romance and classy seduction even Hollywood A-listers find it hard to resist.

Dots: Polka dots are spotted all over the runway and they have never looked better. Stella McCartney is one of the many designers who rolled out lots of monochrome pieces decorated with spots this season. The timeless prints give a hint of retro breeze to even the dullest outfit without making it look too overwhelming.

Espadrilles: This Fall, espadrilles reach new heights with more interesting shapes and colours. Women now have a casual yet stylish alternative rather than their over-worn, go-to flats. Pair a pair of espadrille flats with cropped denim shorts, you’ll find yourself a whole new look.

Feather: Often for the rich and famous, feather details are perfect for extravagant events. This season, feathers are seen on every placement and in every colour imaginable. These feathery creations lend a touch of bohemian and whimsy on accessories, and not to mention exude a free-spirited feeling.

Grunge: Nothing spells 90’s alternative rock better than a good ol’ pair of Converse. Top off your grunge ensemble with a distressed outfit just like Freja Erichsen for Isabel Marant and you are ready to take center stage.

Handbags: Picking a handbag that balances fashion and function is just as essential as choosing standout shoes and the perfect dress. While “it” bags are on most women’s must-haves list, you can’t go wrong with a classic monochrome carrier or colourful pieces to finish off your outfit with a bang.

I.T. accessories: Gadgets are undeniably one of the trendiest must-haves this season but merely owning them is not enough. With countless fun and sleek accessories to choose from, now the gizmos can be dressed accordingly to complete your outfit and mood.

Jacket: Gone are the days when they were worn just to keep warm, jackets are now regarded as an essential fashion item that assures the gents an urban and sophisticated look. Fashionable denim outerwear and varsity jackets are in the spotlight, tempting you to put one on regardless of the climate.

Knit: There is no need for knitting classes so as to own an exceptional sweater – knitwear is everywhere. Seen on scarves, hats and even pants, knit is no doubt the protagonist this Fall with moss green, charcoal grey and pumpkin orange as headlines.

Lily Donaldson: She was described as “one of the most expensive-looking girls” by noted casting agent, James Scully in 2008. Today, British model Lily Donaldson is the new face of Aldo. Declared as one of the top 30 models of the 2000s, the Victoria’s Secret model is taking over the fashion world by storm.

Music: They say small details matter and that is exactly the case when it comes to fashion show music. Often overlooked and rarely mentioned, runway music usually comprises obscure tunes. Whether the models are marching on the catwalk to the dance beats of Calvin Harris or to a more subdued sound by Florence and The Machine, runway music can easily make or break a show.

Nine West: Nine West is no stranger among shoe lovers. Best known for quickly translating runway styles into everyday wear, the brand decided to start its own trend and roped in noted designer Giles Deacon to release a line for its Autumn/Winter collection. Along with the range of gorgeous shoes, bag enthusiasts will also be delighted with the classic-meets-trendy selection of handbags and clutches.

Oriental: From the runway to pages of Vogue UK, the growing trend of oriental influences is booming and paying homage to the Asian heritage. And it doesn’t stop there; Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, a fi lm based on a novel tells the tale of two girls who contend with the rigid cultural norms imposed on women in 19th century China. With a star-studded cast, the movie is a must-watch.

Python: If last season was the season of the leopard, then python is essentially the print for this Fall. Sleek new offerings of exotic, wild varieties from coats to slinky blouses grace the runways, bringing instant glam to any look.

Quilt: The mention of “quilt” often brings blankets or coats to mind, but the quilting technique has taken over the fashion world and is one of today’s hottest trends. No longer used just to keep warm, quilted bags are not only for ease in carrying to work or shopping due to its soft and lightweight fabric, it also adds a touch of sophistication.

Racy: Corsets and lacy tops are no longer worn behind closed doors. Designers such as Bebe and Jean Paul Gaultier took cues from the bedrooms and take on a fetishistic approach to their lingerie-inspired collections.

Sports-inspired: The thought of sports apparel may leave many cringing at flashbacks of tacky jumpers and shorts. But thanks to Lacoste’s Autumn/Winter 2011 collection, sportswear is making its mark on the fashion map with stylish racer back vest dresses, jersey trousers and comfortable sandals.

Toddlers: Suri Cruise, Shiloh Jolie-Pitt and Harlow Madden are little Hollywood darlings not just for their famous parents, but also for their impeccable sense of style. Dressed to the nines and looking good, GAP Kids share the same mantra with its line of fashionwear that undoubtedly keeps toddlers looking like a million dollars.

Ultramarine: Pick up a fashion tip of two from socialite Tara Palmer-Tomkinson that shared the limelight with Kate Middleton’s reception in an electric blue dress teamed up with a pointed hat, clutch and heels in the same colour. Simply skip the matchy-matchy part and go for some ultramarine-coloured shoes or accessory, sets you looking regal and show-stealing in a flash.

Viva Glam: After a major debut with Cyndi Lauper, Lady Gaga is back as the spokesperson for M.A.C. Viva Glam, a campaign by M.A.C. Cosmetics to raise awareness on the impact of AIDS. The proceeds from the sale of Gaga’s new Lipstick and Lipglass nudes go toward helping men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS.

Watches: They say an outfit is not complete without an accessory, and watches are at the forefront of what is hot. From timeless classics to young and urban pieces to suit a particular occasion, it is no wonder one could be spoilt for choice with thousands of selections to choose from.

XL: Fall 2011 proves that size does matter as accessories make a big impact, literally. Elaborative and larger-than-life, these extras spice up any and every outfit. A flashy jewelry is not as intimidating as it looks; it flatters your features if worn correctly.

Yesteryears: Set in early 60’s, drama film adaptation of Katryn Sockett’s The Help not only portrays the life of two African-American women during Civil Rights era America but also stunning clothings that exude a retrospective of impeccable yesteryear fashion.

Zip: Zippers have come a long way from being hidden behind a flap of fabric. The zigzag teeth in silver or gold accents on shoes, bags and dresses are complimentary to any style, casual or edgy. There is no need for a big budget, simply invest in an exposed zippered accessory to stay on top of fashion trends this season.
